A well-prepared surface is key to a long-lasting floor. That’s why, for many of our projects, we use a hydrophobic 100% solids epoxy primer as the first layer. This primer is designed to promote strong adhesion and help reduce moisture-related issues, creating a stable base for the flooring system. Whether you’re installing epoxy or polyaspartic floors in a garage, patio, driveway, or commercial space, this first step is essential in setting up a durable and reliable surface.
What is a Hydrophobic 100% Solids Epoxy Primer?
Let’s break it down:
100% Solids Epoxy means there’s no evaporation of solvents or water, allowing for a thicker, more resilient application.
Hydrophobic means it is formulated to resist moisture, helping to minimize the risk of water vapor affecting the coating.
This primer is commonly used for exterior projects, high-humidity environments, and concrete slabs where moisture vapor transmission is a concern.

Why is a Hydrophobic Epoxy Primer Used?
✔ Moisture Resistance: Concrete naturally absorbs and releases moisture, which can interfere with coatings. This primer is designed to act as a moisture-resistant barrier to help mitigate those effects.
✔ Enhanced Adhesion: Since concrete is porous, this primer penetrates deep into the surface, helping the coating layers bond effectively.
✔ Smooth Base for Coatings: It helps fill minor surface imperfections, creating a more even foundation for the next layers.
✔ Compatible with Multiple Flooring Systems: It works well with various coatings, including solid-color epoxy, Tru-Flake and Eco-Sparse flake systems, and Tru-Flow metallic epoxy.
What Happens After the Epoxy Primer?
Once the primer is applied, the next step is the base coat, which in many cases is a pigmented polyaspartic layer. This helps provide color uniformity, added strength, and UV stability, ensuring the finished floor looks great and performs well over time.
